The formation and activities of the Russian-Jewish intelligentsia are under consideration as well as its role in Russia's social and political life in the second half of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th centuries.

Hangover at someone else's Feast (Jews and the Russian Revolution)
The participation of Jews in Russian social movement at the beginning of the century as well as in the revolutionary events of February-October 1917 and the Civil War (up till the middle of 1918) is considered. Jews' affiliation with some party or other is under discussion as well.

Pogrom in Balta
The article deals with the history of the anti-Jewish pogrom in the district town Balta of the Podolia province at the end of March 1882 without leaving out preceding and subsequent events. The position of both local authorities and Russian society in regard to anti-Jewish outrage which occurred south of Russia is analyzed.

The Jewish Problem in Russia as seen with the Eyes of Americans (From the History of the Russian-American Relations at the End of the 19th Century)
The author sheds light on the relations between Russian and American Foreign Offices concerning the Jewish problem and the reaction of American public to the discriminational policy of the tsarism towards the Jews. The problem of Russia's Jews' emigration to America is touched upon in the article.

The Jewish Family Partisan Detachment of Sh.Zorin
The author expounds the history of a Jewish partisan detachment which took part in military operations in Byelorussia from April 1943 till July 1944.

The Jews as seen by the Slavs (based on Materials of Traditional Folk Culture)
The article is based on the folklore-ethnographic records of the 19th and 20th centuries which were published first in the works of P. Chubinsky, K. Moshin'sky, M. Federovsky, O. Kolberg a.o. as well as on materials of the Polessk Archives of the Institute of Slav and Balkan Studies (Russian Academy of Sciences).

The Language of Daghestan's Mountain Jews
The author gives a concise description of Daghestan's Mountain Jews language system in its various aspects - phonological, grammatical, syntactical and lexical. The article is supplied with basic historical and linquistic data concerning the origin of its name, native speakers, system of writing and research history.

V.KHITERER
Jewish Education in the Ukrainian People's Republic (1917 - 1920)
Based on archive materials preserved in a number of central and local archives of the Ukraine the article considers the problem of Jewish education during the existence of the Ukrainian People's Republic.
