JEWISH HERITAGE SOCIETY
          PROGRAMS

Research, information and publication programs of the Jewish Heritage Society are devoted to the development of Jewish scholarship in the CIS and the Baltic states. All programs of the Society involve a wide range of scholars and research institutions.

  • Preprints and reprints publication program
For many Judaica scholars in the former USSR a publication of a scholarly work in the JHS Preprints series is the first and often the only opportunity to share their ideas with colleagues.

  • Depository and Bibliography programs
Scholarly works - research essays and articles, source studies and bibliographies - also become available through the JHS Depository.

  • "Jewish archive" program
The primary task of East European Jewish historiography is to explore and research the source materials on the history of Russian Jews. The JHS is consistently working on cataloging and publication of Jewish historical documentary sources from archival holdings of repositories in the CIS and the Baltic states. The JHS experts and members as well as archivists and librarians throughout the former Soviet Union are involved in this program. Nine issues of the "Jewish archive" series reviewing documentary sources of Jewish history in state repositories of Russian Federation, Ukraine and Belarus were published in 1994 - 1997.

  • "Vanished world" program
A forthcoming extensive data base "Vanished world" includes information about remnants of the Jewish past from Jewish communities, synagogues and private collections.

  • Information bulletins
The Society keeps scholars informed about a variety of events and activities of the academic life in the field of Jewish studies. The JHS information bulletins publish materials about recent and upcoming conferences, educational programs, exhibitions, research projects, reviews and surveys of recent publications in Jewish studies. The bulletins provide readers with broad data on the programs, availability of published materials, grants, etc.

  • Services for scholars
Most JHS members are amateur scholars - enthusiasts and active participants in the revival of Jewish culture and scholarship. The Society makes efforts to assist and to coordinate their work by supplying them with research literature, bibliographies, etc. Research works of JHS members are reviewed by leading experts of Russian-Jewish history. The Society distributes its publications among scholars, research institutions, universities, and libraries through its worldwide mailing list. All publications are also available on-line on the JHS web site. All together it contributes to the establishment of a direct link between Jewish scholarship in the former USSR and Jewish scholarship worldwide.

  • Partners
The JHS cooperates with many Jewish scholarly institutions. Joint research and publication projects have been launched by the Society with institutions and groups working in the field of Jewish history and culture throughout the former USSR.

All JHS services and publications are free of charge.
