The Jewish Heritage Society is an independent scholarly institution for the development and coordination of research in history and culture of the Jewish people in the Russian Empire and the USSR, and documenting the Jewish historical legacy.

The Society's interests embrace a wide range of academic scholarship in the field of Jewish studies including history, sociology, ethnography, source studies, booklore, etc.

The Society's activities are aimed at support and cooperation with scholars, research and educational institutions concentrating in Jewish studies, libraries and archives of Judaica. The JHS is operating in the following directions:

• research projects devoted to scholarly exploration of the Jewish past in the Russian Empire and the USSR;

• publication of research in Jewish studies;

• publication of the information bulletins covering major current events in academic Jewish - studies conferences, research projects, information resources, dissertations, etc.;

• distribution of JHS publications among subscribers - Judaica scholars, research institutions, universities and libraries - by mail worldwide and electronically over the Internet;

• putting together a complete bibliography of recent research on the history of Jews in Eastern Europe; preparing a review catalog of current publications; providing individual bibliographic services to scholars;

• development, publication and electronic distribution of a directory of historical source materials on Jewish history in repositories of the former USSR and development of a depository of copies of archival records and source studies;

• reviewing works by leading experts in Jewish studies;

• tracing, collecting and exploring historical source materials on Jewish history in the CIS and the Baltic states;

• cooperation with Jewish communities and organizations in preservation and research of their cultural heritage - books, manuscripts and archival records.
