The Institute of Judaica in Kiev is an independent institution for the development and coordination of scholarly activities in the field of Jewish history and culture in Ukraine. (The Institute having acted as the Research Center of the Association "Judaica" of Ukraine before 1996).

The major projects of the Institute comprise:

• archival research of Jewish documents in the state archives;
• sociological, demographic and political monitoring of the Ukrainian Jewry;
• documenting history of Holocaust in Ukraine;
• scholarly seminars, lecture tours and conferences;
• publication.

Starting from 1992 and in cooperation with the Israeli academic institutions the Institute has organized five International conferences on Jewish studies in Kiev.

The publication activities of the Institute include proceedings of the annual scholarly conferences "Jewish History and Culture in Ukraine" (with four books already published) and literary annual "Egupets" as well as a number of large scale publications.

Currently the Institute is preparing following publications:

• Khiterer V. Documents on Jewish History from Kiev archives (16th - 20th centuries)
• Proceedings of the Jewish commission on history and ethnography of 1920s - 1930s (compiled by V.Khiterer)
• Kovba Zh. Honor in the ocean of cruelty (righteous gentiles who perished saving the Jews)
• Beregovsky M. Purimshpils
• Mitsel M. Documented History of Aliah from Ukraine: 1940s - 1970s
• Ukrainian Jewry: Popular encyclopedia (edited by M.Feller)
• Jewish Sites of Kiev: a tourist guide (edited by M.Kalnitskii)

The Institute has participated in editing and publishing of the proceedings of the 1993 conference on Ukrainian-Jewish relations in Jerusalem published in Ukrainian and Russian (in monthly "Philosophical and Sociological Thought". No. 1 - 2, 5 - 6. Kiev, 1994) as well as in English (in the fifth volume of the "Jews and Slavs" series together with the Hebrew University of Jerusalem).

Dr. Leonid Finberg is the director of the Institute.
