ACADEMIC JUDAICA IN THE FORMER SOVIET UNION:
    UPDATE ON ACTIVITIES
Israel, Russia, USA, Summer - Fall, 1997
    By: Jonathan Porath

This has been a very active time for Academic Judaica
in the Former Soviet Union (FSU) as well as in Israel.

    1. Israel
A major delegation of nearly two dozen academics
and researchers from the FSU attended the Twelfth World
Congress of Jewish Studies in Jerusalem (July 29 - August 5).
Their presence was greatly felt in numerous sessions and
helped to establish the renaissance of FSU Academic Judaica
on the larger agenda of Jewish Studies. A widely attended
session (nearly 100 participants) on Developing of Jewish
Studies in Russia and Publications in Russian was hosted by
the Hebrew University in the presence of the Minister of
Absorption, Yuli Edelstein. At that gathering, plans were
announced for a program of academic cooperation between the
Hebrew University and the Jewish University of Moscow.
"Sefer", with the help of the JDC, and Mr. Evgeni Satanovsky,
President of the Board of Directors of the Jewish University
of Moscow, assisted in bringing the scholars to the Congress.
Twelve outstanding graduate students in Jewish Studies
from the FSU spent three weeks in Jerusalem studying in the
Eshnav program, a summer seminar sponsored by the JDC and the
Joint Authority for Zionist Jewish Education, under the
academic direction of Dr. Shaul Stampfer from the Hebrew
University's Melton Center and a member of our Advisory
Council. They filled in knowledge gaps, discovered new
material in the huge libraries in Israel, and were exposed to
the great academic scholars in their respective fields. We hope
to further invest in these young people and in their colleagues
to gradually build a firm base for Academic Judaica in the FSU.
A large representation of members of the "Sefer"
International Advisory Council, together with guests from the
"Sefer" Academic Board and other guests and students, met at
the end of July in Jerusalem. Featured was a discussion of
the draft "Sefer" Position Paper: Prospects and Objectives
for the Development of Jewish Studies in the Former Soviet
Union, as well as comments from the visiting Eshnav students.
Copies are available from the JDC office in Jerusalem.

    2. Russia
Please note the dates of the forthcoming "Sefer"
International Academic Conference in Moscow, February 3 - 5,
1998. Local transfers in Moscow, and room and board for the
conference dates will be covered by the JDC. Unfortunately,
we do not have the budget for travel to Moscow. Please
communicate your plans to Dr. Victoria Mochalova of Moscow
    Center "Sefer" from September.

    3. USA
We have scheduled a session on Academic Judaica at
the forthcoming AJS Conference in Boston, on Monday, December
    22, 1997.
