CHRONICLE OF THE JHS

Past events
-----------

October 1996		a review of Jewish Heritage Society programs and
			publications was published by "Vesti" - the major 
			Israeli Russian-language newspaper. The publication
			facilitated contacts between the Society 
			and Israeli scholars and research institutions.

December 1996		the Society's web site was marked "recommended" by the
			"Jewish Guide to Internet". The JHS home page includes
			the most recent and complete information on the 
			activities of the Society and many of its publications.
			A wealth of archival and research material in the field
			of Jewish history and culture in Eastern Europe is also
			available for download from this site.

January - May 1997		a number of announcements of the JHS programs and 
			publications appeared on the Internet mailing lists 
			devoted to academic Jewish and East European studies -
			Mendele, H-Judaic, H-Russia, Ha-Safran and many others.

January - July 1997	the Society participated in major events of Jewish
			academic scholarship in the former Soviet Union:
			- annual scholarly conference on Jewish studies of 
			  Moscow Center for university teaching of Jewish 
			  civilization "Sefer",
			- the Second international students conference on 
			  Judaica in Moscow,
			- research seminars and workshops in St. Petersburg 
			  Jewish University, Moscow Holocaust research center
			  and Jewish genealogy society of Moscow, etc.

May 1997			the JHS started an electronic newsletter "Jewish 
			Scholarship in Eastern Europe" (JSEE). The newsletter
			is designed to develop information exchange and 
			cooperation among scholars and institutions
			involved in research and preservation of Jewish
			historical and cultural heritage in Eastern Europe.

July 1997			the Society prepared a joint survey of Jewish higher
			education in the former Soviet Union. The survey is a
			result of a discussion at the meeting of the 
			International Academic council of Moscow Center for 
			university teaching of Jewish civilization "Sefer".

August 1997		the JHS started the Syllabi publication project. This 
			project is aimed at the development of Jewish Studies 
			in academic and educational settings in the former 
			Soviet Union. The Society is planning to introduce 
			the FSU scholars, teachers and students to courses 
			in Judaica offered at universities worldwide.

Forthcoming events
------------------

December 1997		a presentation of the JHS programs and publications 
			is planned at the 29th conference of the Association 
			for Jewish Studies in Boston, USA. The presentation 
			will be held at the session "History of Jews in Russia 
			and the former Soviet Union: Concepts and documents".

JHS ON THE INTERNET

Electronic newsletter "Jewish Scholarship in Eastern Europe"
-----------------------------------------------------------

Two issues of electronic newsletter "Jewish Scholarship in Estern Europe" 
(JSEE) went to circulation among more than 300 subscribers worldwide in May
and July 1997. The newsletter is dedicated to academic research in the field 
of Jewish history and culture in Eastern Europe. The JSEE is maintained and 
moderated by the Jewish Heritage Society.

The purpose of the newsletter is to disseminate information about Jewish 
scholarship and research focusing on Eastern Europe. It covers: 

- research, documentation and publication projects developed by Jewish 
  scholarly institutions and individuals; 
- major events in academic scholarship including conferences, seminars, 
  research workshops, etc.; 
- new books and publications in the field; 
- cooperation between Jewish academic projects in Eastern Europe and Jewish 
  research institutions and scholars in the West.
